About Baile
Baile Research Institute is an independent institute in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, working on technical and philosophical questions about AI systems. It is being organized as a nonprofit corporation.
Most of the work so far is empirical. Project Ariel collected answers from eighteen language models to two moral dilemmas drawn from novels, and three raters, one human and two models, scored twelve of them against a written rubric. You can read the responses and scores in the comparison tool, and both studies are on the Publications page. The memory work asks how much a rule stored in an AI memory system still binds once it is retrieved: across ten ways of delivering the same rule, retrieved rules carried less weight than the rule typed live.
The three programs overlap more than their names suggest. The memory experiments reuse part of the Ariel rubric, because what a model can remember shapes what it can honestly claim. And questions about digital minds get sharper as systems keep more of a history of their own.
Baile was founded by Paul Vasholz. He holds a PhD in political science, with a focus on bioethics and political philosophy, and master's degrees in human-computer interaction and information science.
